With the highly anticipated R-rated picture Anyone But You, directed by Will Gluck and starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, Sony Pictures is poised to inject a bit of spice into the rom-com genre. This film, which is scheduled for release on December 22, 2023, was charged as a contemporary interpretation of William Shakespeare’s beloved comedy “Much Ado About Nothing,” adding a good helping of romance, humor, and raunch.
The plot centers on Sydney Sweeney’s character Bea and Glen Powell’s character Ben, who were college rivals and reunite at a destination wedding years after graduation. To the surprise of everyone, they choose to act like a couple for private reasons, only to discover that they are deeply in love while acting the part. The official synopsis suggests a fun trip full of romance, humor, and a little mischief.
The trailers for the movie, which were released on November 16 and October 19, give fans a taste of Sweeney and Powell’s captivating chemistry. The latter trailer features a Titanic reenactment, laughs, sultry banter, and even a bare-butt moment from Powell, all set to the upbeat “Bad Idea Right?” soundtrack by Olivia Rodrigo. It seems like a promising addition to the world of romantic comedies.
“I saw the trailer and it was actually really good, the titanic scene and the one where they both got scared by the spider and it resulted in both of them falling in the water in both clips was really funny”, says Henriana Barthelemy 9th grade.
The cast for the movie also includes Dermot Mulroney, Michelle Hurd, Alexandra Shipp, Darren Barnet, and Rachel Griffiths, adding depth to the ensemble and elevating the film’s star power.
Still, there’s an additional level of intrigue because of the drama surrounding the stars of the movie in real life. The on-screen chemistry between Sweeney and Powell has sparked dating rumors, with fans raving about their strong friendship off-set as well as on. Both actors have responded to the rumors with professionalism and humor, highlighting their commitment to
advancing the movie despite the rumors.
“I’ve only seen clips of them on TikTok, and they seem quite close. Many people in the comments were talking about their proximity, saying that they might be dating and I honestly think the same”, says Narayani Sandoval 9th grade. Anyone But You promises to be a delightful mix of romance, humor, and a hint of controversy as it gets ready for its debut in theaters. Known for his work on “Easy A” and “Friends With Benefits,” Will Gluck appears to have created a movie that honors vintage rom-coms while also offering a novel and audacious viewpoint on the genre. Prepare yourself for a hilarious and emotional rollercoaster as the story of Bea and Ben’s love is told on the big screen this December.
