The 2024-2025 school year has just begun, and the girl’s Varsity volleyball team is wasting no time getting started with their season. The girls’ volleyball season opener was on Wednesday, August 21st vs Everglades High School. The girls’ first game started promptly at 6 pm. The team seemed energetic and excited to get their first game started. The beginning of the game started strong for both teams, with the score almost tied for most of the set. Unfortunately, Coral Glades ended up losing the first set 21-25. During the second set, Everglades High School dominated with Coral Glades losing 3-25. This was an upsetting loss, but they hoped to bounce back in the third set. After that large loss, Coral Glades came out to the final set with renewed energy and focus, holding the lead for the majority of the time. However, in the end, they couldn’t pull off the victory, with Everglades winning 22-25.
Even though they lost the first season game the players on the team were not discouraged, sophomore Malia Mohammed says, “We played well but there were times that we were down and were not talking to each other. We just need to bond as a team. I am hoping that this will strengthen our team chemistry, which will hopefully lead us to more wins throughout the rest of the season.”
Despite the loss, the players and the cheerleaders maintained an amazing energy during the game. On the court, the players always looked like they were having fun, and the cheerleaders were supportive on the sidelines from start to finish. The music in between the breaks also got the crowd excited and pumped to cheer on their team.
Senior Aryanna Blanco the team captain had an outstanding game with 6 kills, 3 digs, and 2 service aces. During the game no matter what the score was she made sure her teammates were focused and ready for the ball. Senior Lindsey Perlmutter, the setter for Coral Glades, had a combined amount of 18 assists from the 3 games.
A player on the boy’s Varsity volleyball team, Junior, Cooper Yellin attended the game yesterday and claimed, “This was their first game of the season, but they played like it was their last, they were out there giving it their all with good sportsmanship, showing that they love the sport and love the team. Everglades High School took the win but I know Coral Glades left it all on the court to try and win.”
Lastly, the head coach of Everglades High, Kaitlin Bernabe, said “It was amazing to play Coral Glades, they put up a good fight, the atmosphere was electric, and the team has immense talent from that first game alone. I can tell they have a promising season ahead of them.”
