Climate Change is a big issue for the U.S. and the world and new evidence from scientists that climate change is affecting more than the temperature but our weather too.
On August 19th in Sicily, Italy, disaster struck a British yacht sinking it in the process killing 1 man and leaving 6 missing in this freak accident. At 4:30 am, fisherman Francesco Cefalu went out to check the weather to see if he could go fishing but saw a flare and went over to check it out, but by the time he arrived the boat had already sunk and he saw no one at the scene, he assumed it was a waterspout (a tornado over the water) which have been popping up more and stronger than before which can produce up to 124 mph and the warming of the sea is making these storms stronger and stronger, and how these water sprouts sink ships is by these water sprouts ripping the mast off the boat and while that is happening high-intensity waves and winds are hitting your boat and this creates holes that water starts going inside of and filling your hull leading to a sink.
Scientist and President of the Italian meteorological society Mercalli said about this incident, “The episode could have been a water spout, essentially a tornado over water, or else a downburst, a more frequent phenomenon that doesn’t involve the rotation of the air.” This proves that this incident was caused by nature, and to add onto this Mercalli also said, “statistics show that downbursts are becoming more frequent around the country, and may be connected to global warming.” Heavy rain has been going through Italy after weeks and weeks of scorching heat and because of this, the temperature of the water was 86 degrees Fahrenheit which may have caused the waterspout to appear.
Similarly last year on Lake Maggiore another waterspout killed 4 people and sank a tourist boat the same way, and while this is all happening floods and landslides are wrecking Italy, this seems like a warning sign as Italy is getting hit with these storms and intense heat when will it go to other places in the world.
More evidence of climate change affecting weather has come forward from the University of Barcelona and their scientists, in their studies they found that water sprouts appear more over warmer waters, and possibly because of climate change the Atlantic Ocean has been unusually hot, and because of that more water sprouts are showing up which is scary, as the world heats water sprouts will become a more common disaster like hurricanes or tornadoes which will impact boating and water activities in the future, which is why we need to care more for our planet and work together to lower greenhouse gasses for our home.
