With the high school basketball season around the corner, districts are changing and teams are adapting. Will the Jags have a better season with the new district?
Last season the Jags finished 14-14 while going 2-1 against teams in their district. Last year’s district (district 14) consisted of six teams in Broward County. Coral Springs High, Western High, Coral Glades High, Cypress Bay High, J.P. Taravella High, and Cooper City High.
While the Jags were one of the more talented teams in the district, they were young, having 5 freshmen on Varsity. One of the freshmen, Gavin Reed, who averaged 7 PPG and 2.5 APG last season, says “Playing in this new district I think our team can beat every team in it. Our district last year had way more competition.”
This year’s districts consist of Park Vista High, Santaluces High, Boca High, Spanish River High, Coral Glades High, and Stoneman Douglas High. The Jags brought in a new Head Assistant Coach from North Miami High, a 2x District Champ. We asked him how he felt the season would play out with the new district and he said, “We should do well because we are one of the most talented teams in the district. We have a great coaching staff, and we should be able to compete with every team in our region.”
District 13 is what the Jags will be competing in this season. Last season, district 13’s winner was Boca High. Going 3-2 in the district, they beat Park Vista High in the district championship. This year the Jags are looking to bounce back from last season’s loss to Western High 50-52 in the district semi-final. Tahir Bond, a senior last year, had a game-high 29 points. Unfortunately, his performance was not enough to advance to the district championship.
This will be a very exciting season as they have many returners. The Jags also brought in 3 new players, Kyler Theophile (Junior), Jayden Bryan (Junior), and Bryan Jean (Senior). We asked Bryan Jean if he is looking forward to the season and what should the High School basketball community expect from the Coral Glades basketball team. “I am looking forward to this season, we are a really good group and we treat each other as one big family. All the people watching us this season should expect us to make a huge run.”
