Recently, Kamala Harris was announced as the Democratic nominee for President of the United States of America. After that, she was in Chicago for the Democratic National Convention meeting to speak to the American public. What will be covered in this article is what happened at the DNC, the events prior, and Kamala Harris herself.
In the events that took place earlier this week, according to the Chicago Sun-Times today, the people who spoke were former US President Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, and Pete Buttigieg. John Legend, Sheila E., and Stevie Wonder also were there and performed for the DNC.
Speaking on Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary knocked on JD Vance for his comments on childless women. He would later have a rooftop party with former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot. It was held to celebrate gay members in public office.
However, the most important speaker was Tim Walz, Kamala Harris’s Vice President pick and former Governor of Minnesota along with being a retired high school football coach. He talked about how, while the Democrats were at the eleventh hour, they still could win, comparing it to football.
Besides that, other events outside of the convention included a protest for pro-Palestine people who wanted a Palestinian American to speak on stage. There were minor incursions with the police, but nothing came from it. However, their request was denied by the DNC on Wednesday.
There is also the controversy Tim Walz is undergoing, as for most of his political career he claimed to be a soldier who served during the Iraq Invasion, however, it was found out that he served in Italy and not Iraq. He was reported by his former comrades and command to have left his command to run for Governor of Minnesota.
Other than that hot water, as things stand, Kamala gave her speech at the DNC and essentially said a couple of things. First off, those things included, fighting for the working-class family, or rather, the middle-class American. The 2nd thing is that she would target Donald Trump with charges and get him prosecuted for events like the January 6th Capitol Hill riots.
The 3rd thing is Project 2025, which is too complicated to cover in this article, but one big thing that Kamala did cover in her speech was how Trump wants to target the Department of Education for elimination. As such he wants to give the ability on how to teach children to the states instead of the Federal Government, whichever you agree with comes down to your personal opinion.
As always, it’s important to ask people on the ground at Coral Glades High School, like Kaden Davis in the 11th grade who said, “I think it’s an interesting thing but at the end of the day whatever happens happens” and Braydon Sloboda, 11th grade “I think she doesn’t like trump.”
In conclusion, Kamala Harris obtaining the nomination was a given considering nobody else challenged her. Her stance on Trump is unsurprising considering she currently is the Vice President and is actively working against him. Either way, this election is likely to shape the future of America for years to come.
