Marketing is a crucial part of today’s society. Movies, shows, and music artists all rely on having a strong presence through their content and their marketing.
At times movies are outshined by others due to their marketing and structure of the movie. Media in that perspective may be underrated or ignored by many. Simultaneously, media can be overrated or demanded by the audience, typically out of bias, for the content.
Though most people do not realize it, the media is often portrayed this way purposely. It is designed to either be a hit, mediocre, or an appropriately rated film by executives.
For instance, Megamind works as a standalone film and is considered to be a masterpiece by many. Most notably, the portrayal of tropes and the characters and how each exceeds a trope attached to them into a new concept.
However, executives choose to either respect the IP or to use its image as popularity bias, often done to gain profit. This makes the media seem to be misunderstood by its creators when it was a choice to produce the media in such a condition.
However, IPs like Megamind are purposely given the short end of the stick to make the company a profit. The company while damaging its reputation gained more in profit than if they put time and effort into the film.
A work that has been given the intentions it deserved during production often is considered to be a gem because of the attention it was given. However, people may look back and consider the work to be overrated or too much attention for its worth.
Underrated media exists since it was purposely marketed not to get nearly as much traction due to the company’s bias on profit vs. quality. This affects media in other respects, however, it’s not nearly as common as a film due to the person in question.
Massive brands and artists are given their respect due to their popularity. Thus, they aren’t questioned by executives and are seen as the next hit and profit maker for them. However, those who have been in their respective business or are new understand not being seen as their worth.
People see the humongous pop star or writer when they are treated as badly as the newcomers at one point or another. They mention the art of business and how it may destroy someone if not given for their success or their success.
For instance, Stan Lee created Spiderman as a passion project but was considered by his publisher to be “the dumbest thing he’d ever heard.” Then, Stan Lee burying his creation added him to the end of a popular magazine in the comics section.
Almost a month later, his publisher came back and loved Spider-Man and gave the character the attention he deserved. However, it was only after Spider-Man gained traction in which he let Stan use the IP.
Unless useful people in power won’t give those, who have a vision the time and effort they deserve. The perception of its production is then seen by its audience and then judged to be underrated or overrated.
People consider many films to be underrated due to their production and the executives behind their decisions. Overrated films are those given the chance to shine and have been given more attention, not out of respect, but out of profit and intentions by higher-ups.
While tragic, it is the reality many creators and artists experience daily. Whether they are famous or unknown, they all start at the same point and deserve to be heard. Those who made it in their business today just happened to be those who were given the chance.
Societies, such as the Animation Guild, are set to let these names be respected and heard. While minor to the executives, it makes a grand impact over time, shaping future respect for all who choose that business.
Beyond animation, people fight for these rights daily and while not always successful, they at times get heard. The people give their thoughts on the art or respect between underrated works vs overrated.
“Adidas is underrated, everyone’s getting them, they’re expensive, they’re ugly, they don’t look good, and it’s just like people will buy them for 1000 dollars and for what?” Julissa Georges, junior.
Jelissa Simpson, another junior, mentions her conflict between New Balance and Asics. “New Balances are underrated, and Asics are overrated. New Balances look the same as Asics, but they’re like more expensive and New Balances look better.”
While small, it leads to a future where all are respected no matter how large or small. It is up to the people of today to make that impact and let their voices be heard. However, executives fear one thought, “How long until they break through?”
