Starting 5 is an upcoming documentary of the behind-the-scenes look at five of the NBA’s best players. The documentary will only be on Netflix beginning October 9th. The 10-part series includes Jimmy Butler of the Miami Heat, Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves, LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers, Domantas Sabonis of the Sacramento Kings, and Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics. This series will show how these players live on a day-to-day basis with basketball and their personal lives.
Jimmy Butler, star of the Miami Heat, got kicked out by his mother when he was just 13 because she had told him, “I don’t like the look of you, you gotta go.” This made Butler want to prove himself not just to his mom but also to his father who abandoned him and his family when he was just an infant.
Anthony Edwards, a rising star for the Minnesota Timberwolves lost two very important people in his life, his mother Yvette who passed away from cancer on the 5th of January, and 8 months later his Grandma Shirley also passed from cancer on the 5th of September. Anthony Edwards has worn the number five since the 8th grade to honor both his mom and grandmother.
LeBron James, captain of the Los Angeles Lakers born in Akron, Ohio had a rough upbringing while not having a father figure in his life. His pee wee football coach, Frankie Walker helped LeBron and his family by taking him under his wing. This made LeBron grow as a player and a man. LeBron then went to play basketball where he is now arguably one of the greatest to ever play the sport.
Domantas Sabonis, son of former NBA player Arvydas Sabonis was born in Portland, Oregon to Lithuanian parents; he was brought up in a basketball household. He started his career in Spain, then, moved back to the States to play college basketball for Gonzaga University. He led the league with 77 double-doubles in the 2023-2024 season.
Jayson Tatum, current NBA champ, was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He was born in a single-family home with his mother raising him and his half siblings. He attended Duke University where he stayed for one year. Tatum then got drafted 3rd overall by the Boston Celtics in the 2017 NBA draft. Jayson Tatum played a big role all his career and led the Celtics to a championship title in the 2023-2024 season.
We asked Donovan Swain, a varsity basketball player at Coral Glades if he is excited for ‘Starting 5’ he said, “I can not wait for this to come out because it has 2 of my favorite NBA players in it.”
This documentary will attract many fans of all ages. Tune in to the premiere on Netflix on October 9th!
