Every city and town has its own history and it is important to learn about your city’s past so we can appreciate the future. Coral Springs is the city we all know and love, but there is much more to the city than what we see. 61 years ago the city of Coral Springs was founded by Joe Taravella and James S. Hunt. They purchased 3,860 acres of farmland and this sparked the building of Coral Springs. There are many historic landmarks in Coral Springs that can be visited today! Senior at Coral Glades Kamila Rivas says “I always drive and see historic landmarks thinking they were just boring structures, however when I researched the history I was intrigued with what I found out about our wonderful city.”
One landmark available to visit is the Covered Bridge. Built in 1964 the Covered Bridge is the first structure ever built in the city. It was meant to be an entrance to Coral Springs. This bridge was of a colonial style which was the vision when designing other parts of the city. This bridge has been marked as the only covered bridge in Florida. The bridge is 40 feet long and is located at, 4500 NW 95th Avenue Coral Springs 33065.
The Coral Springs Museum of History is the site of many historic landmarks in Coral Springs. Originally the building was a real estate office. This was the first real estate office in Coral Springs. Over the years the real estate office turned into a police station. This would be known as the city’s first police station. The police moved out in 1972 due to the lack of space in the building. The Jaycees then used it as a clubhouse, the Jaycees are an organization that uses social service to teach leadership and business development. In 1976 the building was moved so the land it was placed could make way for construction. The volunteer fire department accidentally set the building on fire while training, but it resiliently survived the fire. On October 20th, 1977 was moved to its permanent spot in Mullins Park. The museum officially opened on March 4, 1788. This museum can be visited at 10250 NW 29th Street Coral Springs 33065.
In 2023 artwork was built to honor the city’s 60th anniversary. This piece of art is called “The Living Story of Coral Springs” by Casto Solano. This work is a steel paneled structure with images and words that depict Coral Springs and its history while also telling the stories of surrounding areas. This can be found next to the Coral Springs Museum of History.
Learning about your city is important so that you can truly appreciate your area. Coral Glades Senior Brandon Reeves says “Learning the history of where you live is important because it helps you understand how your community came to be and why things are the way they are now. It can make you feel more connected to your town or city and give you a better idea of the issues people face today. Plus, knowing the past helps you make smarter decisions for the future.”
