The post-tropical Cyclone Milton crashed the west coast of Florida as a category 5 hurricane. It hit Tampa leaving the water 12 feet above ground level. The aftermath of this storm brings devastating results, with at least 16 people dead and the death toll still rising. Some people are missing, while others are in the dark with no power.
The president is even calling Hurricane Milton “the storm of the century.” There was also misinformation about the federal response to the hurricane that the president and vice president spoke on. Kamala called it “unconscionable” for leaders to spread hurricane misinformation. President Biden talked about his administration’s response to the hurricane three separate times. He had spoken on the phone with officials in Florida about Hurricane Milton making landfall.
The hurricane left terrible floods and home wrecks all across the west coast of Florida, but mainly in Tampa. Several counties have reported fatalities from the hurricane. Countries like St. Lucie, Volusia County and Pinellas County all have reported at least two fatalities and St. Lucie County has reported the highest amount; six fatalities.
“The hurricane seemed really catastrophic for the people in places it struck, and I hope they are able to get back to normal and continue on with their lives.” Said Sophia Clavero, a freshman.
The president’s administration is in the middle of helping communities recover from the damages of the storm. The people within those communities have also started to help as well.
Many citizens of Florida have already started rebuilding and cleaning up after damages like flooding, and power shortage. It’s going to take a lot to try and rebuild everything and everyone has to work long and hard. Something that helps are donations to foundations or people that are going to work and fix the damages. “I think it is sweet how Taylor Swift decided to donate money. Usually I would think celebrities want all their money for themselves but after this hurricane it is great that is not the case.” Said Rihanna Edwards, a freshman.
Feeding America received a significant donation of five million dollars from the superstar Taylor Swift. Dolly Parton is also partnering with Walmart and donated one million dollars to the Mountain Ways Foundation. Walmart will provide flood relief all across the Appalachian region. Both of these charities will help people all across Florida in the wake of the hurricane.
“This contribution will help communities rebuild and recover, providing essential food, clean water, and supplies to people affected by these devastating storms.” Said the CEO of feeding America, Claire Babineaux- Fontenot.
Everyone wishes the best of luck for the people affected by the hurricane so that they can get back on their feet and return everything to normal.
