As we all may already know or have seen, it’s hurricane season. Hurricane season is from June 1st- November 30th which falls into our school time. The main question is should we have to make up the days we miss due to the hurricanes?
Just recently Hurricane Milton affected Florida which caused us to have 2 consecutive days-off of school. And this has raised talk about whether or not these days would have to be made up or not. By making up these days that means we could either lose a day that was supposed to be a day off from school, lose early release days, or maybe even get summer pushed back a few.
Jayden Garcia (12th grade) “I think it’s crazy that we have to suffer the consequences of something that we can’t control and have no say in whatsoever. It’s not fair to us to have our school year expanded over hurricanes that have been a possibility we could get and them making us wait longer for our graduation.”
Of course, with topics like these, there are always two opinions. Well, the first opinion is we should have to make it up because these are days that were meant to be used for learning and we are just missing out on education for fun. While others may argue we shouldn’t have to make these days up because hurricanes are out of our control and a day or two wouldn’t hurt our education on an extreme level. They could also argue that there should be days in our school district designed specifically for these situations knowing that our state can get hurricanes.
“I could understand why they would want us to make the days but it wasn’t a big portion of education. Being lost 2-3 days isn’t going to really take a toll or make us any less smart. We don’t have to make days when we are absent, what’s the difference?”
Even if we were not given these days off it wouldn’t even be possible to even get to school and have a normal day with heavy rains that can cause accidents for drivers going to the school, power outages, flooding, having shelter for everyone to not get wet, and the safety protocols of these hurricanes/tropical storms.
Education is a big part of success and it is a fact that we need it and can use this education anywhere we go. But as students, school is pretty stressful sometimes and the days we get off are our relaxation. These off days could be days that we already made plans for and we shouldn’t have this taken from us or minimized because of things we can’t control.
