Everyone heard of the Joker at some point in their life, whether it is from the iconic comic books, the DC Lego movies that include revolutionary characters like Batman, Superman, Harley Quinn, Robin, Wonder Woman, and the Flash, or any D.C. movie that has been released, all very well produced and greatly profited films that include iconic character, Joker.
Very relevant actors have in the past impressively portrayed the Joker like, Jared Leto in Suicide Squad, legendary Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, and Mark Hamil who is widely known for his involvement in the Star Wars Franchise voiced the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series. All widely known actors are respected for their portrayal of The Joker.
The newly released movie “Joker: Folie à Deux” includes the infamous actress and singer, Lady Gaga, multiple-time Grammy winner, plays Harleen Quinzel also so very iconically known as Harley Quinn.
Harley is part of the very many DC’s most known female characters, with the Harley Quinn comics being one of the most popular titles that constantly is a part of top sales. The many expectations viewers and movie watchers have on Lady Gaga to accurately portray Harley Quinn in the new film ever since Margot Robbie’s performance in past movies “Suicide Squad” and “Birds of Prey.”
“I loved Margot Robbie in Suicide Squad as Harley Quinn, so when I heard that Lady Gaga was going to play the same role, I got super excited and expected the same sort of personality that we got from the first Harley appearance in the new sequel that Lady Gaga is in” Said Tatiana Jimenez, a sophomore.
With the release of the movie, everyone’s expectations have either been let down with viewers saying that the sequel was a complete letdown considering how powerful and thought-provoking the first film was and that what made the original Joker great—its raw portrayal of mental illness, society’s failures, and the descent into madness—was completely overshadowed by a chaotic mess in this follow-up or with people saying that they dived deeper within the lore of the Joker with it being a sequel and all, or with it being surprising as to how well it was and that Lady Gaga Surprisingly did well.
“People are sort of overreacting when it comes to the output of the film, I would get it when the harsh review is coming from a die-hard D.C fan expecting a lot, but when the insane movie reviews and Tiktok videos are coming from people who do not really know what they’re talking about, it’s a little excessive.” Queenie Augustine, a freshman.
Social media’s response to the movie was more than expected with its usual memes being spread of how “goofy” the movie was made and plenty of comments mentioning the budget of the movies and questioning if they would even make any sort of profit from the film.
