Schools all around Florida have been closed because of all the storms that’s been happening lately. This has many people concerned with how many days of school we are missing, does this mean that all breaks and PSD days will no longer be? With the amount of days we have missed this month alone, it’s looking like your Thanksgiving and winter breaks will be pushed back. Or our summer break will be cut shorter which is something we definitely don’t want to happen.
Should this even be a thing? We can’t control the weather so why would we pay for it? Like using study hall as a way to make ur assignments or even have students come to school earlier or even have them stay later. Either way, there needs to be a way to make up assignments without interrupting our breaks.
The weather shouldn’t be the reason why we can’t spend time with our families and friends. Many of us already have flights booked for the upcoming holidays. So how would you tell those families that their family members wouldn’t be able to see them because of something you can’t control?
Many of us have to wait until Thanksgiving break to see family members that we haven’t seen in months or even years. You can’t just take away that joy from these students, for some this might be the last time they will be able to see some of these family members. Or it may even be the first time in a long time that they can see these family members.
Although it’s not confirmed that this will happen, many people are complaining about how many days students are missing. They are saying that students are out of school more times than they are in school. Which in the long run isn’t helping students pass state exams or even pass in their classes.
“I’ve had my Thanksgiving plans set for about two months now so the thought of having to cancel them isn’t something I want to or even something I want to think about”, says Jake Wilson a junior.
The thought of not being around all of my family members isn’t what I imagined my holidays would be. I imagine my holidays around all of my love eating all the amazing food that I’ve been thinking about since last November. And creating all the wonderful memories that we will look back on for years to come.
“Just the thought of not being able to create memories with the ones I love the most just makes me sad and not want to celebrate the holidays,” says John Brown a junior.
