Halloween is the most popular holiday of the year because of how kids get to dress up as whatever they like and go trick-or-treating with their friends and families. Many people love to participate in fall activities like pumpkin decorating, apple picking, and wearing cute Halloween-themed makeup for fun.
The main activity that people participate in is trick or treating. That takes place on the actual day of Halloween at night. Children and some adults too, dress up as a character of their choice and go out in their neighborhoods for candy. Everyone in that neighborhood is supposed to have a bunch of candy to pass out, so the trick-or-treating can be successful. This is the most favored thing to participate in during the month of Halloween. Many find it really fun and love the large amount of candy they get from it.
While trick or treating brings joy to a lot of people, there can be multiple dangers that can put them in harm’s way that they should really be aware of. From choking on a piece of candy to kids getting lost, trick or treating is hazardous if people aren’t careful.
Even the makeup little ones want to wear that goes with their costume can be unsafe because they could have an allergic reaction to certain products. To prevent this, parents can make sure to test their children’s makeup and costume for any allergic reactions by putting makeup on a small patch of skin and trying on their costume beforehand.
Another hazard of trick or treating is pedestrian traffic, where children can get hit by cars while walking because drivers cannot see that well due to the large crowd of people. Drivers also may be on their phones while driving through a neighborhood that has trick-or-treaters, so it is important that an adult is always supervising children throughout the night of Halloween to make sure kids are looking at where they are crossing the street and prevent any possible accidents from happening.
“I think Halloween is really fun to celebrate and with everyone doing the right thing and following great tips to be safe, Halloween wouldn’t be a night that bad things happen.” Rihanna Edwards, a freshman said.
People get really creative with their costumes, especially kids. Although their costumes are cute and creative, some costumes people wear can bring them harm by not letting them be able to see, or some, even breathe. There are also costumes that may be flammable and can catch on fire if something were to happen. Because of this, people should wear the safest costumes possible to avoid flammability, and make sure that they are able to see out of their ambitious costumes.
“My mom would keep me and my siblings safe by keeping us in group and making sure that we would stray in her sights and after we were done she checked all of our candy to make sure they were all safe to eat.”, Aaliyah O’keefe, a freshman said.
In addition to having supervision and safe costumes, parents are also able to put their child’s name on their costume, hand out non-edible treats part of the time, and use flashlights to ensure the safety of their excited trick-or-treaters!
