Philadelphia is known to Americans as the birthplace of the country. This is the state where the founding fathers of our country held meetings and signed important U.S documents such as the Declaration of Independence and Constitution. Here in Philadelphia, we had the chance to see the musical Hamilton.
Hamilton is a musical that uses modern-day hip-hop/Rap music to portray the life of founding father Alexander Hamilton. Alexander Hamilton was originally an immigrant from Charlestown, Nevis, who became the first U.S. Secretary of Treasury during George Washington’s presidency.
It was very interesting to learn about history in a way that allowed students to stay engaged. Although the musical is 2 hours and 45 minutes long, the intermission halfway through helped us take a break to process the information we got in the first act.
However, at times it was difficult to put the pieces of the story together because it didn’t go in order of events.
The narrator of the play was Aaron Burr who killed Hamilton. The musical also explored the lives of other influential people during that time through song.
There was a variation of emotions throughout the show, for example in the second act Thomas Jefferson was introduced. His featured song was an upbeat jazzy song that was humorous. This gave an idea of the character’s personality throughout the show. There was also a point in the show that had a sad emotional value to it. This was when Alexander Hamilton’s son was killed in a duel. The song “It’s Quiet Uptown” gave the audience a view of how the Hamiltons felt about the death in the family.
The actors also made the show by portraying a character that helps tell the difference between the personalities of each person. For example, the main character Hamilton was meant to be shown as very eager, hardworking, and impatient. In each song, he was rapping which is a symbol of how he felt he would run out of time and not be able to make a change, and a commonly repeated line throughout the show was “Why do you write like you’re running out of time?”
Hamilton also has been featured on Disney+.”Hamilton” is a musical recorded version of Alexander Hamilton’s life, his contribution to the American Revolution, and his impact on history. The film was released directly on Disney+ on July 3, 2020. It is a film version of the captured live stage performance with its original cast, including Miranda as Alexander Hamilton, Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr, Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton, and Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler.
