With the 2024-25 High School FHSAA basketball season starting today for many schools, there are many games to look out for tonight. There’s JP Taravella vs Coral Springs, North Beach Miami vs Hialeah, Stoneman Douglas vs Pembroke Pines Charter, Dillard vs Northeast, American Heritage vs Ransom Everglades and even Columbus High will face off against Prolific Prep who is from California. But the very anticipated, must-watch matchup between Coral Glades High and Calvary Christian Academy.
Calvary Christian Academy is coming off a great season last year, going 18-9 but came up short in the regional finals last year losing to North Broward Prep by a buzzer-beater. They’re looking to have a bounce-back year, especially for returning senior, class of 2025, 5-star combo guard Shon Abaev. Shon has many Division 1 offers from big schools like LSU, Illinois, Florida, UCF, Auburn, Kansas, Tennessee, Arizona State, Oregon, Georgia Tech, Syracuse, Michigan, Georgia, USC, and many more top schools in the country. Shon is coming off an amazing season last year, averaging 18.1 points, 3.2 assists per game, 6.3 rebounds per game, and 1.8 steals per game.
Also, a returning guard for Calvary is 6 ‘0 sophomore Cayden Daughtry. Cayden is currently ranked top 100 in the class of 2027 on ESPN. Cayden also received his first Division 1 offer from West Virginia over the summer playing EYBL with Florida Rebels.
Coral Glades and Calvary Christian Academy faced off Tuesday night at 7 pm at Calvary’s home gym and Calvary Christian beat Coral Glades 54-75. Shon Abaev was the one who stole the show Tuesday night. Shon Abaev had 25 points,4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal on 10-16 from the field and shooting 67% from the 3-point line. The next highest scorer was class of 2026 Collin Paul who ended the game with 24 points, 15 rebounds 3 assists, and 1 block recording a double double on 50% from the 3-point line.
“We played hard for the first half but coming into the 2nd half, we fell behind and our effort was nowhere to be seen. On the good side, it was a tough first game of the season and we will only get better from here on out” Anthony Valdes, a senior guard.
For Coral Glades, Kyler Theopile led the team in scoring with 16 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals, and 1 assist. Behind him was Ethan Jean Louis with 11 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 block recorded. Finally was Anthony Valdes with just 9 points and 4 rebounds.
“We didn’t play bad, I thought we could’ve executed what we had to do better and could’ve made better in-game adjustments quicker and tried to stop Shon and Cayden and the rest of the team but, it’s alright, only the first game of the season, we’ll bounce back Thursday.” Bryan Jean, senior and starting center.
Rough game for Coach Ham and his team but they’re looking to bounce back on the road this Thursday as they play Plantation High at 7 on their home court.
