The Coral Glades Media Center, otherwise known as ‘The Den,’ is home to a variety of educational, entertaining, and inspiring books for students to access. School libraries help students access books that they may not have or may not be able to afford. They can also allow students to expand their learning.
Some students may need more information than what teachers give them to process information and school media centers provide them with the resources to reach the information. The average high school library has over 13,000 titles in around 50 different genres. Here, we will deep-dive into The Den’s most popular genres and titles!
Genres are the categories in which a title falls—for example historical fiction, horror, romance, drama, comedy, etc. If I had to guess what genre Coral Glades students check out the most from the library I would assume it would be romance novels. High schoolers enjoy reading romance novels, most likely because of how engaging and dramatic these books are.
As expected one of the hottest genres here at Coral Glades is Romantic Comedy novels. Lynn Painter is a New York Times best-selling author who writes Romantic comedy novels, she wrote ‘Betting on You’ and ‘The Do-over’. Both these titles are being checked out quickly in the Coral Glades Den. Romance novels have grown in popularity due to the increasing exposure they have been receiving from popular social media content creators.
In The Den, students also have the opportunity to check out textbooks that follow the curriculum they are learning in their classes. This gives the student the chance to get a better understanding of the curriculum and a jumpstart on the next topic that will be covered in class.
Although students have access to textbooks I do not think textbooks are one of the most checked-out books in the Coral Glades Media Center because in The Den students also have access to the online version of the textbook when they log in to one of the school-issued laptops or computers.
Along with textbooks students can also access books online through the computers in The Den. This allows them to access more titles and check if the physical copy is available to be checked out. “Accessing textbooks online gives me quick access and information that I could get from a library or direct source by use of computer or phone,” says Coral Glades junior, Cooper Yellin.
Students must be aware of and know how to use the resources they can use through the technology and books in The Den. If students understand the vast world that is their school library, students will be able to disconnect from idle technology use and engage in something that works their brain and builds it up. Ms. Lachance, the Den advisor, says
“When teenagers read in their leisure time it essentially makes them smarter, increases focus, and heightens vocabulary.” High school libraries are so important to students and we are so lucky to have such an amazing media center like The Den!
