The decision on whether or not schools should have a block schedule or all 8 classes on the same day depends on specific needs that the students have or the goals of the school. They both have their pros and cons so let’s go through them.
Having a block schedule brings a lot of benefits like deeper focus because longer class periods allow you to get a more in-depth and bigger exploration of the subject without interruptions. You also get less transition time with fewer classes and you get less time spent moving between each subject which makes your days feel less rushed. You might also have a reduced daily homework load which can allow students to have fewer assignments to focus on per day which can also reduce stress.
Block schedules can also have some cons like memory retention. Having longer periods can make it harder for certain students to retain information between sessions, especially if there’s a gap before the next class. You might also have difficulty catching up. Missing out on a day can result in you losing a significant portion of the material, which can make it harder to catch up. Having a block schedule can also result in longer school days which can be tiring for students.
Sophia Bennett (9th grader) stated “Although the classes do feel longer I like block schedule better because the classes that I do like I get to be in there longer and my day goes by quicker.”
On the other hand, all 8 classes have some benefits like consistent engagement because students are engaged with each subject on a regular basis which can help with retention and prevent boredom. Shorter class periods which can result in a lesser chance of fatigue in any subject. Also, the flexibility it brings if a student misses a day because they are missing a smaller portion of the subject which makes it easier to catch up. And more frequent exposure because students are exposed to the subject every day which keeps them well-rounded in all areas.
The cons of all 8 classes on the same day is shallow coverage. Shorter classes may not allow teachers to delve into topics. Increased transitions may cause the day to be hectic and disrupt the flow of the day. You may also receive a higher homework load which can be overwhelming. It also gives students shorter time to absorb the material and retain all the information.
Ethan Marshall (11th grade) stated “I think having all 8 classes is a better way for us to not get easily bored and tired of being in class so long so I prefer 8 classes all in 1 day. It helps us get through school faster.”
All in all, a block schedule is a better option for students who strive from deeper engagement with fewer subjects at a time. All 8 classes are a better alternative for students who prefer a more frequent variety and a less long-term pressure on every single subject.
