Coral Glades offers a variety of options when it comes to taking part in the school’s various performing arts programs. From orchestra to chorus, students are able to expand their artistic skills through the electives the school has to offer. Typically, admission into these programs is not selective. The classes usually welcome students of any skill level regardless of whether or not they have had any previous experience in these fields.
In orchestra, students are able to explore classical music and further develop their instrumental skills. With a variety of different types of instruments to choose from, including strings, woodwinds, brass, and more, this class offers a unique opportunity for students to work with their peers and perform as an ensemble. During class time, students are also given time to refine their skills and work on whatever needs improvement with specialized attention from the teacher, Mr. Sanchez.
Mr. Sanchez also works with the school’s band and color guard. Clearly, his efforts have paid off, as both the band and the orchestra here at Coral Glades have competed against other high schools and have proven to be successful in doing so.
Students who are involved in the performing arts programs are given multiple opportunities to showcase their talents, whether it be at school-wide events or competitions. The orchestra and chorus regularly select their students to go perform at events like the straight A’s breakfast, club inductions, and even graduation.
“As a violinist for the Coral Glades orchestra, I would say that the school has definitely risen in popularity with our successes within the music programs.” Says sophomore Aveline Harding. “I particularly enjoy being able to have a chance to play at the school’s special events. Experiences like these help to better shape my skills and keep me on point.”
During these competitions, schools are evaluated based on the level of their performances, with the possible scores ranging from ‘Superior’ to ‘Poor.’ A ‘Superior’ is said to be comparable to an “A” letter grade, while a ‘Poor’ would correspond with an “F” grade.
Another heavily awarded program here at school is the chorus, led by Mr. Luffred. Students who take chorus are guided on how to use their voice, which all depends on their vocal range. This class is heavily centered around building a sense of community, as the students have to work together in order to sound harmonious. Building teamwork is socially beneficial for students who typically spend the whole day on electronic devices. Through classes like these, many find themselves feeling free because they have a chance at creative self-expression.
“Overall, I’d say I have enjoyed my time spent in chorus with my peers. It’s been fun and I think it is a nice creative outlet that the school offers.” Says Rylee Polich, a sophomore. “I’m also in the color guard, who has recently been awarded with multiple superiors, which has really put us up in the ranks.”
