Marvel Rivals is the most recent hero shooter released as of now and many thought this game would be a flop, but so far it’s been the complete opposite. Marvel Rivals took inspiration from another hero shooter called Overwatch and makes it obviously so within the gameplay. The game is free to play and has 33 playable characters on release.
Personally, I dislike hero-shooter games, but after playing the game for a little bit I can see what makes other people like the game. The game has a huge variety of familiar characters to choose from, a lot of liked Marvel characters appear in this game such as The Avengers, Spiderverse characters, The Guardians of the Galaxy characters, X-Men characters, and a new beloved character, Jeff the Land Shark.
This game doesn’t abuse microtransactions and a lot of people are liking the battle pass system in this game compared to others because in Marvel Rivals you can earn in-game currency instead of having to pay for it with real money. Marvel’s including many character variants from the Marvel comics as well as introducing new variants which made many older and newer fans very happy.
Marvel Rivals is crossplay meaning that friends on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC can all queue together in a game. Crossplay is optional though since some players think crossplay is unfair, some console players think playing with PC players is unfair because they can use a mouse to be more accurate while controller players have a joystick so this feature being optional has made many players happy.
Each character that’s playable has different movement and abilities which adds multiplicity to the options that the players have but also means some characters are more difficult to learn than others. If you and your teammate are playing as characters that are relevant in each other’s lore you can get buffs and sometimes new abilities in the round you are playing.
In Marvel Rivals, like other hero-shooters, you can play as a duelist, a vanguard, or a strategist. Vanguards have more health and protect their teammates from damage, strategists heal their teammates to keep them from doing damage to the enemies, and duelists are the class that focuses on damaging the enemy which makes them heavily reliant on their teammates.
Many enjoy playing Spider-Man and Moon Knight which are duelists while my teammates play as healers. Alexander Garcia, a freshman says, “Marvel Rivals is a pretty decent game that’s especially better when playing co-op with your friends.” I completely agree, with friends this game is super fun and makes the game’s communication better.
Craig Depass, a sophomore says, “It’s a really good game that flows better than Overwatch, and is more casual with its characters.” I personally couldn’t confirm or deny this because I haven’t played Overwatch, but the fact someone who has played Overwatch agrees that Marvel Rivals is better just confirms how well Marvel Rivals is being reacted to by the gaming community.
