The SGA dodgeball tournament that took place on December 13th went very well with many students from Coral Glades and other schools coming out to play. The outcome of the tournament was the teachers’ team and Control ALT Elite in the finals with Control ALT Elite coming out with the win and being the champions this year. The winners got a gift card as a prize.
The tournament takes place every year with each team having a total of 6 players and at least one SGA member as a coach. Every single team has to pay 18 dollars each to play and any spectators has to pay 2 dollars to get in to watch with all the money being donated to a charity in need.
Crystal Carrers grade 11 says “I didn’t get to participate in this year’s dodgeball event because I was recovering from an injury but it was still fun to watch my friends in the game.”
Every SGA member is assigned a partner and they have to create a team of 6 players that can include themselves. Everyone who plays has to fill out documents like emergency contacts, insurance, and other safety precautions. This is to keep the event as safe as possible to ensure that everything goes smoothly.
Once we have the team we then have to pick a team name and a color theme and/or custom jerseys. The execution of the event starts by check-in, every team player has to check in and meet with their team. This is 30 minutes before the spectators are allowed in. This gives the teams to look at the bracket and come up with a game plan.
Before anyone played the referees went over all the rules and regulations so that there’s no confusion during the game. When it came time for the first team to play, the SGA president announced what 2 teams would be playing and they made their way down on the court. Every round was 5 minutes and there was no need for overtime, if the time ran out, whatever team had more players on the court had won that round. Which is simple and fair.
Every single team came out to have fun. Some teams even made custom jerseys, those teams being Bad Baribies, The Dodge Divas, Control Alt Elite, Go Green Go Home, and Dade Dogs. This dodgeball torment that they do every year is a fan favorite from the students since they are involved and have fun winning.
This event raises school spirit and brings a competitive aspect to this charity event.
Sophia Pino, a junior, says “I always have a fun time at dodgeball, even though my team got eliminated after the first round, it’s still fun watching everyone play.” In conclusion, it was a fun event for kids to be together while raising money for a good cause.
