All of the above has happened in the last few days across much of Florida. Many cities across the Sunshine State have crushed their record-low temperatures this week including Pensacola with about 7.8 inches of snow and a temperature of 13 degrees!
Other cities include Tallahassee, Panama City, Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Daytona, Orlando, Tampa, Sarasota, Gainesville, Ocala, and many other cities that came close to beating their weather records as well!
Here in Coral Springs, we have been experiencing a strange bit of weather ourselves. From the consistent misty rain all day to the freezing wind. It’s important that we all stay safe, warm, and healthy these next few months.
With testing such as Cambridge, AP, and finals on the rise, and many sports seasons just getting started (Lacrosse, Baseball, Softball, Tennis, Track, etc.), everyone should try their best to avoid getting sick. So, with this in mind, I asked Coral Glades students what they do to prevent illness (or get rid of it as soon as possible), here are some of the answers and remedies I received:
Jadalyn Alava, a junior, told me that her, “favorite hack for any illness no matter what it is, is using Vicks. My family uses it all the time.”
Vicks VapoRub is a drugstore product made for curing congestion but has many purposes.
Another remedy that I was told about was mixing equal parts of apple cider vinegar and honey. If necessary you can add more honey but start with 1 tablespoon of each. “The apple cider vinegar kills the bacteria and the honey coats your throat, it makes a sore throat or cough go away within a few days.“ – Anonymous, freshman.
Miranda Infante, also a freshman, told me, “To get rid of a sore throat my family uses warm white vinegar mixed with salt.”
I have also been told by someone that they take immunity shots, especially during the cold and flu seasons. “It’s a great way to keep all illness away and it only takes a few seconds to drink one. I typically drink ginger, turmeric, and orange.” – Anonymous, works for the Miami Heat.
Many people have their own health tricks.
Everyone has their own tips and tricks for these kinds of things, in no way are these answers medical advice. These responses are things that work for these people and may or may not work for you. Please remember this whether or not you attempt to try any remedies or techniques.
This has been an insane week as far as the weather goes with it being so cold all over the nation. Everyone is advised to stay warm, stay safe, and stay healthy. Enjoy the cold now because in a matter of weeks, Florida will be back to its sweltering sunny-self.
