The Coral Glades Boys basketball team won their first game of the District 13 tournament against Boca Raton High School on February 5th. District 13 is new for the Jaguars as they were in District 14 last season. District 13 comprises Coral Glades, Park Vista, Boca Raton, Santaluces, Stoneman Douglas, and Spanish River. All 6 teams are fighting for a district championship but only one team will come out on top.
On the night of February 5th, the Stoneman Douglas Eagles faced off against the Park Vista Cobras at 6 pm. To start it was looking like the Eagles were heading to the championship. The Cobras came out hot in the 2nd half and pulled through with a 63-59 victory over the Eagles to make it to the District 13 championship. Then at 7:30 pm that same night your Coral Glades Jaguars went up against the Boca Raton Bobcats. The Bobcats started hot in the first few minutes of the game but the Jaguars found a way to go on a big run with their ball movement and amazing defense.
With the Jaguars going on a run they kept their lead the rest of the way coming out on top with a huge 77-41 win. We asked Gavin Reed how he felt about making it to the district championship for the first time in his 2 years of high school. He said, “It feels great, last year we fell short and to make it this year is amazing.” With this win, they have a chance to win the second district championship in Coral Glades Boy’s Basketball History.
The last time Coral Glades won a district championship was back in the winter of the 2022-23 season. This was the first year that current head Coach (Ham) Stefan Whittingham came to Coral Glades. Coach Ham moved from Fort Lauderdale High to Coral Glades High that year with three key players. Tahir Bond, Ramez Zayed, and Dylan Burrowes. With Coach Ham coming to Coral Glades he changed the culture right away by going 18-10 and 9-0 at home. The Jaguars are 22-1 in the last three seasons when they play on their home floor. This shows that the Jaguars are very difficult to beat at home.
The Jags will be back on the court facing Park Vista in the District 13 championship on Friday, February 7th. We asked Andres Domaya, a senior on the team how it would be to win his first district championship ever. He said, “It would be fun to win my first one with a new team and new staff since it’s my first year here but we can’t wait to get it done Friday night.”
Friday will be a great game, see you guys there. Go Jags!
