The real question of whether or not a man should pay for every date with a woman. There are worthy arguments for and against, based on varied opinions regarding tradition, equality, and recent relationships. On one hand are individuals who think men ought to buy all dates as a demonstration of respect.
Men have historically been considered to be providers, and paying on a date may be an extension of that role. It is generally thought to be proper and respectful that men should pay on dates, at least on a first date. It can cause the woman to respect and appreciate herself and provide a positive relationship atmosphere. And not all think that just because men as a group are better paid as a result of the gender pay differential, they are under any kind of obligation to pay on dates.
“I believe it’s the right thing to do as a man to pay for the majority of those dates. However, at some point, the woman has to take accountability and end up paying for some dates,” Delfin Gonzalez, junior student.
Nonetheless, there are sound reasons why men need not be forced to pay on every occasion. In this generation where women are equal to men at its fundamental level, forcing men to pay on every occasion might maintain chauvinistic norms. Most women do not object to sharing or taking turns to pay to allow mutual fairness on either side of the relationship. This is to keep both sides as equals who can share expenses. Further, sharing expenses might give relief to men who could not afford to pay on most occasions and turn dating into an open and comfortable environment for everyone involved.
Splitting bills on dates can also encourage couples’ discussions regarding financial issues, which is a highly significant aspect of every relationship. It makes a couple understand their expectations and needs and, as a consequence, better understand each other’s priorities and values. This way, both partners are appreciated and comfortable knowing that their contribution matters and is considered.
“Men 1000 percent should pay for the dates, but at one point in the relationship, women must take some responsibility in the relationship and help pay for the date and treat the man every once in a while.” Gavin Reed, junior.
It all essentially comes down to the couple and where they are as individuals and where they are with their own situation. Some will appreciate the classic gesture of the man paying, and others will want to have a new-world approach to equality and responsibility.
The thought behind this is that men and women need to open up to each other and arrive at a mutual understanding that works for them, with both sides feeling respected and appreciated within the relationship.
