Many students come to school ready to learn, bringing every supply they need, like pencils, pens, and notebooks. While most of the kids at the school have everything that they need to get the school year started, there are still a handful of students, not only in Broward County, but the whole state of Florida, who don’t have the funds to buy their own materials for the school year. No access to binders, folders, or paper.
One club at Coral Glades decided to do something about this. The Key Club, run by Mrs. Roxanne Brissett, is a club where students can do community service to earn service hours. The club does projects that can earn almost 20 hours of service hours, cleaning up the school.
On August 19th, they had their first meeting and picked up a bunch of trash around the huge property. The active members of the Key Club enjoy every second of their time in the club, and we decided to ask some of them what their favorite part of being in the club was.
Sophomore David Tran said, “Being able to help set up for events at elementary schools, like movie night, and being able to participate in the events we help volunteer at.” Another Sophomore Key Club member, Camila Soto, said, “Getting the chance to spend time helping out with my friends and get service hours while doing it.”
These two students really like being able to help people in the community get ready for their school year. Overall, the class is meant to make students feel good about themselves, do good for their community. But how do they help students without learning materials?
Mrs. Brissett and the Key Club community have gathered together to make the Key Club School Supply Drive. The 10-day event, ranging from August 19th to 29th, is made so people like you can donate anything you have that can help students who can’t afford these things.
These supplies include writing and coloring materials, paper, folders, 1-subject, 3-subject, and 5-subject notebooks, composition books, and binders. Donating these items in room 166 can help a child learn a bit more easily. Some of these things, like the paper, folders, and composition notebooks, can earn you 1 Key Club hour, while binders and 3-subject notebooks are worth 2 Key Club hours.
The Key Club is doing great things for the community, and if we keep supporting it by donating our new materials to the drive, they will continue to do great things that other schools won’t do. What Key Club and Mrs. Brissett are doing is amazing, and if you want to join Key Club and support great causes, you can contact Mrs. Brissett at [email protected] or by visiting her room at 166.
