Hola, mis amigos! Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, with nearly 600 million people speaking it. That is a lot of people, more than the population of America. People speak Spanish in approximately 22 countries, including Spain, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, and even a few civilians in the United States. Multiple schools in Florida include Spanish as a class for those interested in learning about the language, and one of those schools is Coral Glades.
Coral Glades offers a lot of language classes in its curriculum, but today we will be checking out Spanish and the club. The Spanish Club, owned by Ms. Maria Rangel, is a club for Spanish speakers and Spanish learners, where they enjoy fun activities and projects related to embracing the richness of Hispanic culture. The students enjoy fun activities related to their culture, sports, and community events.
Members of the club learn how to greet people, ask questions, and use manners in the language. It encourages students to become more familiar with a culture they have never learned about before. Members of the community are allowed to break free from their anti-social shell and communicate with people in a different language, and actually understand them.
The teacher of the club, Ms. Maria, shared with us her favorite part about working in the Spanish club. “My favorite part of the Spanish Club is supporting the amazing students who lead the club and witnessing their commitment to preserving and showcasing the beauty of the Spanish language and culture.” We also asked 12th grader Ivett Barcenas, who is the student president of the club. She said, “What I like about the Spanish Club is that I can share my culture with everyone and get to know a lot of different people from different countries.” Ms. Maria and Ivett are really passionate about their culture and sharing it with the rest of the world.
An estimated 6.5 million students speak Spanish, whether fluently or not, and millions of other students are wondering what they are saying. Coral Glades has multiple teachers who teach Spanish to give students a new perspective on communication. Some teachers, like Mrs. Daysi Sandmire, teach the Spanish Honors Society, a club for fluent Spanish speakers to get more support in an English-speaking school.
The Spanish Club is brilliant, and if you are interested in learning about new languages, stop by. The students and members of the club are very welcoming to you and will accept you even if you are confused with the language, which, trust me, is the case for the majority of people in this school. If you are looking forward to this, head on over to guidance, talk with Ms. Maria, and save your seat. ¡Adiós y que tengas un gran día!
