Every day, all students from around the world use their workbooks and laptops to do homework. Is it really paying off, though? Instead, they can be worrying about other stuff that is going around in their lives. Homework is some type of work that teachers require you to do at home. Some different types of homework can be practice, preparation, projects, etc. While homework can be effective at times for certain skills, it can also stress and mess up a student’s health.
To commence, homework can be effective in teaching people responsibility. When teachers assign homework, they usually give a due date and time they want the assignment turned in. This can teach people how to plan and prioritize certain things over others, which can develop time management skills for the real world, so students will not be all stressed and confused. According to freshman Christopher Dixson, who attends Monarch High School, said, “When I plan my stuff, I can get it done faster and easier while also having time to do my chores and stuff around the house.” Also, homework requires self-accountability. Since teachers let students do the homework at home, students need to take accountability and actually do the homework, and not cheat. Overall, homework creates responsibility in a student’s life.
Homework is needed in a student’s life; however, not everyone agrees. According to studies, homework is known for a reason that students are not getting the amount of sleep that they are required or needed to function during the day. This explains why students walk into the school sleepy and then fall asleep during class. I talked to freshman Gianna Siletta, and she said, “When my teachers assign homework, it is like the worst ever. I have to stay up late sometimes because teachers assign so much unnecessary homework. Which then just makes me wanna sleep during school.” Which is then making them not know valuable information. To add, with the amount of homework teachers assign, students have no free time to do whatever they want. This includes sports, clubs, hanging out with friends, watching TV, or simply going on your phone. Not to mention, homework builds up a lot of stress, which eventually turns into burnout. This can lead to many students not finishing school or not doing any type of work.
To restate, homework causes stress and can mess up a student’s health, but homework can also be effective at certain times. Homework should not be hours and hours that a student has to take out of their day. Schools around the world should start to rethink the “effectiveness” and what type of homework they need to give out.
