School spirit is purely based on engagement. This is why the school holds events such as pep rallies, spirit weeks, in-school games, and others.

Student-led activities, clubs, and events can make other students feel more comfortable and make students want to be involved and participate in the school socials and other events. In other words, they increase engagement.

Not only this but when you have students who want to come to school and be engaged, this will increase school spirit. When school spirit and engagement are increased, so are attendance levels. Along with this, when your attendance levels are raised, so is the overall school rating.

I asked students how they felt about having an incredible number of student-run clubs and events, and here are some of the responses that I received:

Shyleen Khan, a Freshman, says, “I love it, I think that it gives students more responsibility and makes them feel more comfortable.”

Jadalyn Alava, a Junior, says, “I think student-led organizations help build leadership skills and foster responsibility, and it helps the students grow.”

In addition to these, you can see how student-led things like clubs, organizations, and activities positively affect the student body and the entirety of the school. During designated instructional hours, students may not have much time to socialize and enjoy the company of their peers, so clubs act as that social time. They give students a chance to socialize and be with one another.

When you give the students this break in their busy schedule and stressful life by having them participate in clubs and other similar activities with their peers and not the pressure of putting up the perfect facade of a model student, it can feel like a relief to many students, a relaxation period, if you will.

These responses show us that the students of Coral Glades High School enjoy the student-run clubs and activities.

When you elevate the level of engagement at the school, not only will the school be better for it, but so will the students. Having the highly desired overall school grade of an ‘A’ means that the school will get the benefits that come with this sought-after grade, in turn further benefiting the students.

When students are running the activities, not only does it make students feel more comfortable and willing to participate in the events, but it also benefits the students who are working behind the scenes and masterminding the amazing things that go on within our school.

These experiences that the students have going through high school will go with them after graduation and into college and follow them even farther to their jobs and can even be implemented into their everyday lives.

All around, student-led activities can be beneficial not only for the student body but for the students running the show themselves.

Essentially having these students run clubs and other activities makes students want to participate, increasing engagement and school spirit, and above all, it increases how much the students enjoy their school day.
