The Oscars, which are also known as the Academy Awards, are awards that are given for artistic and cinematic achievements. The Oscars are considered to be the most prestigious awards in the film industry. ABC channel will be streaming the 97th Academy Awards which will take place on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. This award show started in May of 1929 at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles California. Louis B. Mayer founded the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1927 to create the Academy Awards.
Some recent and significant achievements in the film industry have been movies that were released in the last year. Dune: Part Two, Anora, Wicked, Inside Out 2, Moana 2, and Emilia Perez. The movie Wicked became very popular as soon as it came out, earning $164 million worldwide. The movie was based on a novel from 1995 written by Gregory Maguire about the wicked Witch of the west. The movie focuses on a young woman named Elphaba with green skin who forms an unlikely friendship with Glinda, who is a student yearning for popularity. Elphaba was played by actress Cynthia Erivo and Glinda by the singer-songwriter Ariana Grande. Wicked has been nominated for 10 Oscar awards, including Best Picture, which is the highest level of Academy Awards. Other nominations it received are Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Original Score, Best Production Design, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects.
“I did not even watch Wicked, but I still knew that one song that Elphaba sings because everyone was singing it from TikTok. After seeing a few scenes pop up on TikTok tok I went and watched the movie and it was actually amazing,” Said Aaliyah O’Keefe, a freshman.
“The Oscar awards seem so cool because they give awards to something completely different from the Grammys, and it is so interesting to see all the different awards that can be given,” said Mia Mueller, a freshman.
Another actress, Mikey Madison is nominated for best actress in a leading role for her role as Anora in the new movie Anora, which is about a young woman who meets and marries a rich kid but their marriage gets threatened by his parents who want to get divorced.
Inside Out 2, a new movie that is a sequel to the first Inside Out movie that was released in 2015, is nominated for best animated feature film. Kelsey Mann directed the movie, and Meg LeFauve and Dave Holstein wrote the screenplay.
Dune: Part Two is nominated for Best Cinematography. Well-known actress Zendaya and actor Timothee Chalamet starred in Dune together.
The movie “Emilia Perez” was also nominated for best cinematography. The star actress is Karla Sofia Gascon. It also is nominated for best directing, with the director being Jacques Audiard. Best Film Editing is another nomination this movie has, as well as Best International Feature Film.
