A few days ago, it was announced that Jamaica would be facing a tropical storm. Not a lot of people batted an eye at this news, and Jamaica was prepared to face anything. But on October 25th, 2025, the storm was officially designated as a hurricane. But not just any hurricane, the strongest weather event of 2025, and one of the worst tragedies in history.
Jamaica wasn’t the only country that got hit by Melissa. Haiti, a country that has faced dozens of tragedies in its time, lost almost 30 of its people during the landfall. The deadly hurricane just left Cuba as a Category 2, which is a huge downgrade after it became a Category 5 during its reign in Jamaica. People have been left devastated by the event as multiple buildings in the Caribbean were taken down, and dozens of people were taken to the hospital.
According to the mayor of Black River, Richard Solomon, “The conditions here are devastating, catastrophic is a mild term based on what we are observing here.” This hurricane seems like something that people won’t recover from for months to come.
This hurricane is breaking records, as it is tied for the 3rd strongest hurricane in the Atlantic by lowest pressure. Melissa is tied with the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane, which killed over 400 people when it hit. The worst part is that there is still a chance that the hurricane can climb its way up to the top if it keeps at the level it is.
Dozens of people are in need of things like blood and supplies. Dr. Jacquiline Bisasor-McKenzie, the Chief Medical Officer in Jamaica, said, “We are urging all Jamaicans who can give blood. Your donation can save lives, especially at a time when hospitals are still in emergency mode and every unit counts.”
Sources claim that the main reason for the creation of Melissa was human-caused climate change. Due to climate change, hurricanes have become stronger and more destructive because of warmer ocean temperatures and increasing sea levels. These two factors will make the hurricane have heavier rain, more powerful winds, and more that cause intense destruction to the land. While climate change doesn’t fully create hurricanes, they do contribute to the terrible things it causes.
This hurricane should not be taken lightly. We need to learn everything we can about these horrible storms and work with country leaders to make the country safer from the threats they pose. I hope everyone reading this learns from this and can work together to protect the world from these extreme natural disasters. Everyone, pray for the Caribbean and everyone who has been and will be affected by this hurricane.
