For as long as we have been exploring the ocean, people have thought we have explored all of it. Wrong, humans have only explored about 6% of the ocean, leaving 94% of the ocean unexplored. Ocean exploration is the exploration of the ocean’s physical, chemical, and biological properties. Space exploration is the exploration of space’s cosmic bodies, understanding the universe, and searching for life beyond Earth. Humans do these types of exploring for scientific discoveries, technological advancements, and economic benefits. Space exploration is super beneficial, but ocean exploration should be funded more.
To commence, ocean exploration should be funded more because it is simply more important. The ocean covers 71% of Earth, and we have not even explored half of it yet. Yes, space is the area we live in, but think about how many saltwater marine animals there are, with how little we have explored the ocean. This can answer many other questions. For example, are there animals that are thought to be “extinct” somewhere down there, and can we someday live in the ocean like fish? I asked one of these questions to freshman Issac Gross. He said, “I believe that there are some animals that are in the ocean right now that are thought to be extinct. We would never know because ocean exploration doesn’t get the funding that it deserves. Also, not even animals, I believe that these legends and mythical creatures in the ocean are true and are just hiding in the deep parts we have never explored. Clearly, ocean exploration needs to be funded more.”
Ocean exploration also benefits humans. The ocean helps us with our weather. Scientists use the oceans’ tides and waves to predict weather and keep us safe. I asked freshman Avery Elizabeth, “What do you think about the exploration of the ocean?” She said, “I think the exploration is great. It helps us in many different ways. It can help from positive effects on your brain to hospitals to scientific reasons.” The ocean can help us make medicine. There are many bacteria and organisms that live in the ocean to create antibiotics.
On the other hand, people think space exploration needs to be funded more than ocean exploration. People say space exploration leads to technological progress, and it inspires innovation.
To restate, ocean exploration should be funded more rather than space exploration. The ocean has its physical, chemical, and biological parts. Space has its cosmic and universal stuff. The ocean controls Earth’s climate, protects biodiversity, and ensures food security. If we can fund the ocean’s exploration, we will give the next generation cleaner oceans and discoveries that can help.
