Social media algorithms are designed to show you exactly what they think you want to see. Every like, share, and second spent watching a video feeds data into a system that predicts your next move. While this makes scrolling feel personal, it also traps you in a digital bubble. You are slowly being fed a version of yourself that an AI created based on your past habits. This prevents you from discovering new interests naturally because the software is already deciding your personality for you.
When an algorithm runs your feed, it creates an echo chamber where you only see one type of fashion, music, or opinion. You might think you have a unique “niche,” but you are actually just following a path laid out by math. This limits your growth because being a well-rounded person requires trying things that might not be your “vibe” at first. If you only interact with content that feels comfortable, you lose the ability to think outside of your current interests.
When asked if their online feeds are actually helping them find themselves, sophomore Daniel McKenzie noted the lack of variety. “I feel like my phone thinks it knows me, but it just shows me the same things on my feed, like on Instagram and TikTok, the videos all have the same theme,” he said. “It’s like I’m stuck in a box and can’t see other themes and different types of videos.” Sophomore Sebastian Amaya agreed that the algorithm makes it too easy to stay in that lane. “The algorithm makes it so I can’t see other videos and almost is not letting me become my own person,” Sebastian added. Both students worry that while the “For You” page is easy to use, it keeps them from exploring who they really are.
The cost of this convenience is a loss of true curiosity. In the past, people found new hobbies by accident or through friends in the real world. Now, we wait for a screen to suggest our next favorite thing. This makes our identities feel manufactured rather than earned through real-world trial and error. If you let an app tell you what is cool, you are letting a company control your self-image. It is easy to confuse a viral trend with a genuine passion when the two look the same on your phone.
You must take back control of your own identity by breaking the algorithm. Search for topics that have nothing to do with your usual feed and follow creators who challenge your point of view. Use your time to explore hobbies that do not require a Wi-Fi connection or a camera. Your personality should be a collection of your own choices, not a set of data points on a server. Real life is full of surprises that a computer cannot predict, so step away from the “For You” page and find out who you really are.
